Yellow and grey is one of my most favorite color combos. It’s just so calming, cheerful, and so sophisticated without feeling stuffy. It can be used for any event throughout the year (for winter think warm fuzzy greys and mustard yellows) and will always be in style! Plus, who doesn’t love seeing a pop of yellow below a wedding dress or bridesmaids sporting cute little yellow heels all in a row? I die.

One of the most fun and simple ways to bring in some personality and design into your wedding is with a signature drink cocktail or a festive bar. It’s also a relatively budget friendly detail with a huge impact. Love it.

A trend that we hope never leaves is the mason jar. We love using fun containers for your cocktails and a mason jar adds such a fun design statement, whether you’re having a rustic chic or oceanside affair.

Glass dispensers are one of the best ways to display your cocktail choices. It’s also a great way to tie in any details such as rustic twine and colorful drink signs!

I’ll give you a moment to catch your breath. Pure beauty will do that to ya. Hot pink grosgrain ribbon mixed with a woven Kibo pattern and placed on a perfect little wedge is my kind of heaven. These even look comfy! Well, comfy enough to strut your stuff all over town for an evening. Pair these with a really fun colorful dress or make them the talk of the outfit with a classic pair of pencil jeans and a basic white tee. Seriously, Mr. Rupert Sanderson, you’ve designed a good one here.

One of my favorite things about this time of year is smelling all the fresh lilacs around our house. Is there anything better than a freshly cut bunch of the gorgeous spring flowers sitting on your bedside table? I think not. I think I’m a bit partial to the lavender hues but it’s nice to throw in some white beauties every now and then. How lovely they’d be for a bridal bouquet! Did you know purple is making a comeback? Big time.

Rain again for the next three days in our area, you say? Not to worry. I’m going to stay inside and get a ton of work done and catch up on some lovely reading. And then when the sun comes out, just in time for the weekend, these lovely wedges are just the ticket for a little shopping downtown. Pair them with some cute shorts (oh yes, I’m hoping for a little rise in the temperature, too!) and a breezy top and you’ll be turning heads no matter where you go. I love the preppy straps Tommy Hilfiger has got going on – a man after my own heart.

Friday Wine Tasting… Cinco De Mayo and the Derby!

Well this weekend is sure to be loads of fun!! A double header with Cinco de Mayo and The Kentucky Derby on the same weekend! I am jetting off to Chicago this weekend for an event (actually a guest at a party this weekend) and while I won’t be wearing a fabulous hat, I found the most adorable color block dress at Nordstrom (coral and navy) that is sure to set the tone for a Cinco de Mayo celebration. Wishing you all a fabulous weekend! Leaving you with a few of my favorite recipes perfect for May 5th! Cheers!

Tequilla Pink

Ingredients

1 lime, cut in wedges, optional
Kosher salt, optional
1 cup ruby red grapefruit juice
1/2 cup freshly squeezed lime juice (4 limes)
1 cup orange liqueur, such a Triple Sec
2 cups ice
1 cup white tequila

Directions

If you like a salt rim on the glasses, rub the lime around the edge of the glass and then dip the rim of each glass lightly in a plate of kosher salt. Set aside to dry.

Combine the grapefruit juice, lime juice, orange liqueur, and ice in a blender and puree until smooth. Pour into a large pitcher and stir in the tequila. If youre not serving the margaritas in salted glasses, stir 1/4 teaspoon of salt into the pitcher of margaritas. Believe me, it will make a difference!

Serve ice cold.

Derby Julep

Ingredients

4 cups bourbon
2 bunches fresh spearmint
1 cup distilled water
1 cup granulated sugar
Powdered sugar

Directions

To prepare mint extract, remove about 40 small mint leaves. Wash and place in a small bowl. Cover with 3 ounces bourbon. Allow the leaves to soak for 15 minutes. Then gather the leaves in paper toweling. Thoroughly wring the mint over the bowl of whisky. Dip the bundle again and repeat the process several times.

To prepare simple syrup, mix 1 cup of granulated sugar and 1 cup of distilled water in a small saucepan. Heat to dissolve sugar. Stir constantly so the sugar does not burn. Set aside to cool.

To prepare mint julep mixture, pour 3 1/2 cups of bourbon into a large glass bowl or glass pitcher. Add 1 cup of the simple syrup to the bourbon.

Now begin adding the mint extract 1 tablespoon at a time to the julep mixture. Each batch of mint extract is different, so you must taste and smell after each tablespoon is added. You are looking for a soft mint aroma and taste-generally about 3 tablespoons. When you think it’s right, pour the whole mixture back into the empty liter bottle and refrigerate it for at least 24 hours to “marry” the flavors.

To serve the julep, fill each glass (preferably a silver mint julep cup) 1/2 full with shaved ice. Insert a spring of mint and then pack in more ice to about 1-inch over the top of the cup. Then, insert a straw that has been cut to 1-inch above the top of the cup so the nose is forced close to the mint when sipping the julep.

When frost forms on the cup, pour the refrigerated julep mixture over the ice and add a sprinkle of powdered sugar to the top of the ice. Serve immediately.

It’s fun to pick two color families and incorporate a few different shades of each one into your wedding palette. Choose blush and dark pinks and mix them with fresh hues of lime and kelly greens to create a gorgeous color story. A perfect place to mix your colors are in your linens, florals and bridesmaid dresses!

When planning for your big day, it’s important to remember that it is in fact just that: One day! Everyone tells you to take a step back and soak it all in because it goes so fast. It’s so so true. The more moments you can take in and savor, the better. I love when brides can take little mementos or keepsakes of their wedding and what better way than to have a bridal portrait of your dress?!!!
